Prior to the formation of the United States of America, women had the right to vote in many of the colonies that would later form the United States. By 1807, most state constitutions denied women the right to vote. As early as 1878, bills were introduced in the United States Congress to give women the right to vote, but it wasn’t until 1919 that a bill finally passed and it took another year for states to ratify the amendment in August 1920.
On the obverse field of the 1 oz 19th Amendment 100th Anniversary Silver Round is a portrait of Susan B. Anthony, the leading voice of women in the suffrage movement. She is depicted between two columns with various inscriptions that denote the amendment to the US constitution and the informal name of the bill, “The Susan B. Anthony Amendment.”
The reverse side of the 19th Amendment 100th Anniversary Silver Round features the Roman numerals for the constitutional amendment as “XIX,” with the opening paragraph from the amendment included on this side. You will notice that the date marks of “1920” and “2020” are present to denote the 100th Anniversary of the amendment’s passage.
Susan B. Anthony’s image was engraved on the obverse using the North American Mint’s photo-impressive engraving techniques that deliver photo-quality custom engravings.
