The Chinese Gold Panda coin debuted in 1982 and is notable as the third gold bullion coin offered to investors in the modern era. It followed the 1967 introduction of the South African Gold Krugerrand and the 1979 introduction of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin. The Gold Panda Series debuted in 1982 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, with a 1/20 oz coin offered as of 1983.
On the obverse side of all Chinese Gold Panda Coins is the image of the Temple of Heaven. The building featured on this side of the coin is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the largest structure within the greater Temple of Heaven complex.
The reverse face of 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins features the Giant Panda. A distinct species of bear, the panda is noted for its patches of white and black fur. In particular, most pandas have white fur on their face with black patches around the eyes.
