Among the many symbols preserved from ancient history, the Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most recognizable and detailed. Its presence on precious metals rounds has made it a popular selection for collectors who value historical imagery, geometric structure, and the cultural traditions of Mesoamerica. Available in silver, gold, and copper, these rounds present a careful reproduction of the original stone’s complex design. The Aztec Sun Stone was rediscovered on December 17, 1790, during excavation work being carried out in Mexico City’s main plaza, the Zócalo, as part of a colonial-era infrastructure project ordered by Viceroy Juan Vicente de Güemes. Workers digging beneath the plaza’s surface struck the enormous basalt disk at a depth of less than a meter, and word of the extraordinary find spread rapidly through the city and beyond. The discovery came at a moment of growing intellectual curiosity about Mexico’s pre-Columbian past, and it triggered an immediate wave of scholarly interest.
The obverse of SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Copper Rounds presents the full detail of the Sun Stone. This original work was carved from a single basalt disk and reflects the Aztecs’ understanding of time and the cosmos. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, depicted with an extended tongue in the form of a sacrificial blade. Around him are four rectangular sections representing previous world eras. Encircling these are the twenty named days of the Aztec calendar, followed by additional rings that include jade and turquoise patterns, celestial symbols, and rays of the sun. The outermost portion of the design is bordered by two fire serpents that enclose the entire image.
On the reverse of the 1 oz Aztec Calendar Copper Rounds, a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc is featured. He became the leader of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was its final tlatoani, as well as a nephew of Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc organized a defense of Tenochtitlan. Although the resistance was determined, the city was eventually overtaken. He was captured in August 1521 and later executed by the Spanish in 1525.
