The Mexican Silver Libertad coins were introduced by the Mexican Mint in 1982 as an annual-release bullion offering. The coins were inspired by the original gold Centenario coin, released in 1921 to honor the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain.
The fight for liberty in Mexico began in September 1810 when a Catholic priest by the name of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called upon the people of Delores to rise up against the colonization and tyranny of the Spanish and European occupiers of Mexico. In honor of Mexican victory and the 100th anniversary, the country erected the Monument to Independence in the center of Mexico City.
Each 12 oz Antique Finish Mexican Libertad Silver Statue brings to 3D form the Greek Goddess of Victory, whose figure was used to top the monument in Mexico City. Known as El Angel, she stands 22 feet tall in real life and features on the obverse of the Mexican Silver Libertad coin each year it is released.
