The US Silver Certificate program was in production from 1878 to 1964, with the printing of new certificates ending in 1964 and the redeemable window for the certificates ending in June 1968. The Silver Certificate Series is remembered as one of the most artistic collections of paper money in American history. The first release of a $1 note in the series came in 1886 and featured one of America’s leading female figures from the Revolutionary War era. Right now, 1886 $1 Silver Certificate Martha Washington Notes are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

The 1886 $1 Silver Certificate was issued with a number of “series,” or changes to the printed notations on the note. Each note bears two signatures, typically those of the Treasurer of the United States and the Register of the Treasury. Given that the 1886 Series design was in use for 6 years before minor design alterations were made, the signature combinations on the notes changed, as did the size of the US Treasury stamp and the ink used in that stamp. In all, seven iterations of the 1886 $1 Silver Certificate were released. Please note you may receive varying iterations with your purchase through this listing and we cannot guarantee particular versions of the note in advance.
Although Silver Certificates were introduced in 1878, the initial series of Silver Certificates featured denominations of $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000 only. In 1886, an Act of Congress authorized the introduction of lower denominations in the series to include $1, $2, and $5 notes. At the same time, new designs were introduced on some of the existing notes, such as the $10 and $20 Silver Certificates.
Martha Washington is depicted on the obverse side of 1886 $1 Silver Certificate Notes. This effigy of the first woman to be First Lady of the United States of America marked the first appearance of a woman on American currency. Her effigy would go on to feature on the $1 Silver Certificate through 1895.
