Each 1928 $20 Gold Certificate available in this listing comes in Very Fine condition. The notes come with moderate signs of circulation, numerous folds, mild soiling, and other minor defects. The 1928 Series of Gold Certificates was the first release of the Gold Certificate in a small-sized format. This was the only release of the Gold Certificates in the small-sized format as the notes were canceled in 1933 after the US ended the use of the gold standard. The designs featured on the 1928 Series notes were the same as those introduced in 1928 across the Silver Certificate, United States Note, and Federal Reserve Note programs. The $20 denomination was only available in the Federal Reserve Note and Gold Certificate.
The obverse of 1928 $20 Gold Certificates features a portrait of President Andrew Jackson. The 7th President of the United States of America, President Jackson is the only president to have overseen the national debt being paid down to zero. His effigy features to this day on the $20 Federal Reserve Note.
On the reverse of 1928 $20 Gold Certificates is a depiction of the exterior façade of the White House. This design also features on the reverse of the modern Federal Reserve Note. The small-sized Gold Certificates introduced in 1928 featured blank ink on the obverse and green ink on the reverse. The serial numbers and US Treasury seal on the obverse are printed with yellow ink.
Please note that 1928 $20 Gold Certificates were issued with two different signature combinations for the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury. 1928 Series notes feature the Woods-Mellon signature combination, while 1928A Series notes have the Woods-Mills combination.
