One of the most famed American historical coins, the $20 Double Eagle gold piece was the swan song of renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Known for his work in both relief portraiture and monumental bronze sculpture, he was terminally ill when Theodore Roosevelt sought his help in redesigning the national currency, but he still produced an iconic numismatic design far ahead of its time. The U.S. Mint pays annual tribute to this legacy with the American Eagle Coin Program, including the 2000-W 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin now available from JM Bullion.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was one of the most famous figures of the American Renaissance in the arts, known for such iconic creations as The Puritan and Diana of the Tower, the latter of which was a New York landmark until 1925. He also worked extensively from his early career in the creation of cameos and relief portraits, a background that led to extraordinary results when he turned his hand to numismatics. The first issue of his Double Eagle gold piece was an ultra high-relief design so advanced that the minting technology of the day couldn’t strike it in enough quantity for circulation. The high-relief version of that coin, however, circulated for international commerce between 1907 and 1933, becoming one of America’s best-known coins.
The 2000-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coin commemorates this legacy with a high-quality proof finish that showcases the coin’s original luster, unblemished, carrying a mint mark that identifies it as a striking from the West Point Mint. It ships in box packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The coin’s obverse side faithfully reproduces Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty. She stands with hair flowing, a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, joined by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2000.”
The reverse side features a bald eagle in flight clutching an olive branch, returning to his mate and their hatchlings in a nest below. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “25 DOLLARS,” along with a “W” mint mark.
