In 2006, the United States Mint celebrated the 20th anniversary of its American Eagle Series. The nation’s official bullion collection debuted in 1986 with gold and silver bullion coins. The 2006 release featured BU and Proof specimens, with the Proof Gold Eagle enjoying a bump in demand for the 1 oz gold specimen. The 2006 release of American Gold Eagles was met with increased demand only for the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle. Each of the four weights in the BU range experienced declines in demand, while the three fractional weights in the Proof range also experienced a drop in demand. The 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle jumped from 35,246 in 2005 to 47,092 coins in 2006. Despite the big jump in production, the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle still finished behind the 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle in overall mintage, though the 1/10 oz coin dropped by 2,000 coins from the previous year.
The obverse of the 2006-W Proof American Gold Eagle features the historic image of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this visual offers a front-facing glimpse of Liberty’s full-length figure as she strides toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
On the reverse side of 2006-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle Coins, you will find Miley Busiek’s depiction of the American bald eagle. Here, the eagle is captured as a family unit, with a female eagle and a hatchling in the nest as a male eagle soars overhead. This design was created in 1986 exclusively for the Gold Eagle Series.
