The Year of the Dragon is fifth in the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac. Although the dragon does not appear first in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, it is the most revered mythical creature in Chinese culture. It is said that the nation itself was founded by and saved by dragons.
Queen Elizabeth features on the obverse side of 2012 10 oz Australian Silver Lunar Dragon Coins. This effigy of the Queen is the fourth-generation design from the Royal Mint of England. It depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. Created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, the image was used on British coins from 1998 to 2015 and Australian coins from 1999 to 2018.
A dragon is depicted in the reverse design of the 2012 10 oz Australian Silver Lunar Dragon Coin. The design field offers the image of a four-legged dragon crawling along in pursuit of the flaming pearl, a symbol of wisdom in Chinese mythology. The Chinese symbol for a dragon also features on this side. The dragon is a symbol that has long been associated with the emperors of China and national power, but within the Zodiac it also symbolizes nobleness, honor, and luck.
