In selecting the images for the nation’s official gold bullion coin, the United States Mint opted for the most iconic figures possible. Lady Liberty, symbol of freedom and democracy, was chosen for the obverse. The American bald eagle, defender of freedom and a symbol of majesty, was selected for the reverse. Both images come together perfectly on the 2015 ¼ oz American Gold Eagle coin, available right now from JM Bullion.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 design of Lady Liberty was chosen in 1986 to represent the nation on the American Gold Eagle coin. Saint-Gaudens was a renowned artist and sculptor who was chosen personally by President Theodore Roosevelt to help redesign all of the nation’s gold and silver currency.
Saint-Gaudens’ design was featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, and was the first coin redesigned in an effort by the government and the US Mint that stretched from 1905 to 1921. His Lady Liberty depiction is widely heralded as the single greatest design in American coinage history.
On the obverse is the image of Lady Liberty walking forward toward the viewer, with her torch held aloft as a guiding light. The city of Washington DC is just visible at her feet, while the sun’s rays peek out from behind her figure.
The reverse of the coin features a depiction of a family of bald eagles. In the image, a male returns to the nest where a female is guarding the hatchlings. Sculptor Miley Busiek created this image in 1986, and it is featured only on the American Gold Eagle.
