When you look at the name of the 2016 Chinese Gold Panda, you no doubt notice a change in terminology that separates this coin from other popular bullion products. While the most popular bullion coins in the world are weighted in ounces, the Chinese Mint has ended this practice as of 2016-issue coins.
The People’s Republic of China uses the metric system, and in keeping with that system of weights and measures, the Chinese Mint has decided to start issuing its popular Chinese Panda coins in weight listings of grams, rather than ounces.
On the obverse face of the coin is the image of an adult panda as it crawls along a fallen tree trunk. In the background, there is a wall of bamboo shoots, while the face value of the coin is engraved in the lower-right corner. The Chinese Mint changes the specific design each year, and 2016 is no exception.
The reverse face of the coin bears the image of the Temple of Heaven. Located in Beijing and erected in the 15th century, the site has been a place of worship and sacrifice for Chinese people and ruling emperors for centuries now.
Chinese Gold Panda coins are produced by the Chinese Mint under the supervision of the People’s Bank of China. The coins do not bear mint marks, making it difficult to determine which facilities coins come from originally.
