The Queens Beast Collection of silver and gold coins is set to feature 10 designs in total. Each of the different mythical beasts featured in the series represents a statue on display at the Westminster Abbey coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The Queens Beast coins were commissioned by the United Kingdom in 2016 to celebrate Her Majesty reaching the mark as longest-reigning monarch in British history.
On the obverse of all 2017 1 oz Proof British Gold Queens Beast Lion Coins youll find the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty has appeared on the obverse of all British coinage since 1952, and this is the fifth-generation depiction of the Queen to appear in that time. Created in 2015 by Royal Mint Engraver Jody Clark, Clark became the youngest engraver to complete a portrait of the Queen for coinage.
The reverse of all Proof British Gold Queens Beast Coins features the Lion of England. The most significant creature in British heraldry, the lion appears in a column of three on the coat of arms, and in this depiction, the beast fiercely stands on its hind legs in behind the Royal Coat of Arms ready to defend the nation.
The Royal Mint was founded in the 8th century and resided in the Tower of London from the 13th century until the 19th century. It produces all coins in the Queens Beast Series for the United Kingdom.
