Trade dollars were one dollar silver coins issued by various nations for use in international transactions, predominantly during the 19th century. The vast majority of these trade dollars were used when the birth of global trade occurred in China during the mid-to-late 1800s. Britain’s trade dollar was the result of war.
As China fought back against Britain selling opium to its citizens in the 19th century, two Opium Wars were fought. The result was a British victory, the loss of Hong Kong (ceded to Britain), and an influx of outside trade dollars. The United States and France struck and released trade dollars, with the British Trade Dollar featuring the iconic image of Britannia on its primary face.
The 2018 1 oz British Gold Oriental Border Britannia Coins listed with JM Bullion today are in BU condition. The reverse of all 2018 1 oz British Gold Britannia coins includes Philip Nathan’s statuesque impression of Britannia. This design was created in 1987 when the Gold Britannias debuted from the Royal Mint. On this side of the coin you’ll find the oriental border pattern based upon the Chinese-themed designs of rooms in Buckingham Palace and the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.
On the obverse of all 2018 Britannia coins is the fifth-generation impression of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s right-profile effigy appears on all British coins, and has since her ascension to the throne in 1952. This particular design was created in 2015 by the Royal Mint’s Jody Clark.

“Gorgeous coin in hand, nothing compares with holding a 1oz gold coin in your hand. There’s something about a decent sized gold coin that’s enormously pleasing and satisfying. The 5,000 coin limited montage doesn’t hurt either for such a pricey bauble. Good job in getting a supply of these, JMB!”
