The Native American Proof Silver Dollar Series reflects the historic tribes and regions of North America upon which they were originally found.
The Rappahannock people are one of the oldest and most significant in American history, though not for reasons the people of the tribe might like to remember. The Rappahannock were a dominant Algonquin-speaking tribe living in the Rappahannock River Valley of modern-day Virginia in 1607 when word spread of a group of explorers navigating the James River. These people were, in fact, the first British settlers putting down roots in the New World who would eventually found Jamestown.
Today, the Rappahannock people number just 500 and are one of the 11 state-recognized tribes in the state of Virginia. The people of the historic Rappahannock region feature on the 2018 1 oz Proof Virginia Rappahannock Big Eared Bat Silver coin.
On the obverse side of the 2018 Rappahannock Big Eared Bat Silver Coin, you’ll find the effigy of a tribal member from this group. Included on this side of the coin are engravings of the tribal name, weight, purity, metal content, year of issue, and face value of the coins.
The reverse face of 2018 1 oz Proof Rappahannock Big Eared Bat Silver coins feature the image of the creature referenced in the name. The big eared bat, better known as the Townsend’s big-eared bat, is a medium-sized bat with long, flexible ears. These particular bats are commonly found throughout Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
