When the American Gold Eagles debuted in 1986, the US Mint unveiled a modernized version of one of the nation’s most beloved coin designs on the obverse and an exclusive design of the bald eagle on the reverse. These images were created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and in 1986 by Miley Busiek, respectively.
Since that time, these major design elements have not changed on the coins. However, there was one previous change to minor design elements on the coins. From 1986 to 1991, the date marks featured on the obverse of all coins were listed in Roman numerals. Starting in 1992, the US Mint began using Arabic numerals for the date mark. By mid-2021, Miley Busiek’s image of the bald eagles will be replaced for the first time ever with a new bald eagle design.
The obverse side of 2021 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins comes with that historic vision of Liberty from Saint-Gaudens. Used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, this image shows Liberty in front-facing relief walking forward with a torch to light the way and an olive branch in her other hand.
On the reverse face of the 2021 American Gold Eagle is the family of bald eagles. Designed exclusively for this series by Ms. Busiek, the image shows a male eagle flying above the nest with a branch in its talons and a female eagle in the nest with a young hatchling.
2021 1/2 oz American Gold Eagles available here come with a perfect certification from the PCGS. Mint State 70 coins showcase full, original mint luster and have no detracting flaws. Also boasting a First Strike label, these coins were received for grading within 30 days of the initial release by the US Mint.
