The American Platinum Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1997 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz options available to investors. These four coins were issued annually through 2008. In 2009, the US Mint suspended all four weights of the Platinum Eagle. The series did not return until 2014. When it did, only the 1 oz platinum coin was available.
On the obverse side of the 2021 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coin is John Mercanti’s depiction of Liberty. This design uses the Statue of Liberty for inspiration and focuses on the face of Liberty as she looks out over the Atlantic Ocean toward the horizon as a new day dawns. The coins have inscriptions of “Liberty” and the date mark, national motto, and “E Pluribus Unum.”
The reverse face of 2021 American Platinum Eagle Coins bears a design with an American bald eagle in flight as designed Thomas D. Rogers. The image of this eagle captures the powerful aerial predator with its wings spread out wide as it glides over the nation. The sun is shown rising over the horizon in the distance. The nation of issue, weight, purity, metal content and face value of the coin are inscribed on this side.
