American Gold Eagle Coins debuted at the United States Mint in 1986. The series started with BU and Proof versions of the coin, offering four weights in the BU Series that year and a 1 oz gold coin in the Proof Series. Over the next two years, the Proof Series would grow to include all three fractional-ounce coins as well. The Burnished Series started in 2006 and features only a 1 oz gold coin.
Each American Gold Eagle Coin features 22-karat gold content. The US Mint initially issued American coinage from 1794 to 1834 with 22-karat gold, but in 1834 lowered the gold content of its coinage to 89.92% gold. In 1837, the gold content of American coins was set at 90% gold with an alloy of 10% copper. When the Gold Eagle debuted in 1986, it was the first gold coin from the US Mint since 1933 and the purest since 1834. The 22-karat content of modern American Gold Eagles is 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
Liberty is on the obverse of 2022 1/10 oz Gold Eagle Coins. This design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens is featured in front-facing relief with a ring of 50 stars around the image of Liberty. The design field includes sun rays and the U.S. Capitol Building.
An American bald eagle is found in the reverse design of 2022 American Gold Eagles. This new design was chosen in 2020 for the series and debuted in 2021 at the midway point of the year. The image of the bald eagle’s head in left-profile relief was created by Jennie Norris.
These 2022 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are available to purchase in near-perfect condition. Mint State 69 coins are characterized by the presence of full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines only and must be outside the primary focal points of the coin.
