Four years ago, Intaglio Mint introduced the Molon Labe Series of silver rounds. Commonly offered in 1 oz and 2 oz silver, the series offered ten designs in all before it concluded and each one captured a different stage of the battle between the Greek Army, led by King Leonidas of Sparta and 300 of his elite warriors, and the 150,000-man Persian Army.
At the outset of the battle, Xerxes offered King Leonidas and his soldiers a chance to live, under two conditions. He wanted the Spartans to lay down their arms and for King Leonidas to bow before him. Greek records suggest that Leonidas responded with the phrase molon labe, a rough translation of which reads “here they are, come and take them.”
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of the 2022 1 oz Niue Silver Molon Labe Type 1 Coins. This design element is the popular 1998 design from Ian Rank-Broadley that has featured on coinage throughout the Commonwealth Nations. The image shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The Queen’s effigy is surrounded on this side by a wall of Spartan shields.
In the reverse design of 2022 Niue Silver Molon Labe Type 1 Coins is a depiction of a Spartan warrior in right-profile relief. The figure is standing with his head lowered, protected by his helmet that has a horse-drawn chariot crafted on it. His detailed shield is at his side and his spear is at the ready. In the background, the motif includes the early scenes of the Battle as Leonidas leads his men into the thick of the battle.
These 2022 1 oz Niue Silver Molon Labe Coins are available to you with the Type 1 design from the series. Each one is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and comes in one of three packaging types. Individual coins are in plastic flips. Multiples of 20 come in acrylic tubes. Multiples of 500 come in boxes holding 25 tubes of 20 coins each.
