One of the most famous works of religious art in the world of ancient Greece was a monumental bronze statue of Zeus, the god of sky and thunder and ruler of Mount Olympus, made by the sculptor, painter, and architect Phidias. The colossal creation of gold and ivory was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, destroyed some eight centuries after its creation and known now through second-hand descriptions and depictions.
The Spiritual Art series now celebrates the famous statue in pure, gilded silver with the 2022 Cook Islands Silver Spiritual Art Zeus Father of the Gods Coin. Featuring ultra high-relief artwork and a sculpted shape that reinterprets Phidias’ monument in miniature form, it comes in an elegant windowed display case along with a Certificate of Authenticity to identify each item’s unique number in the mintage.
The coin’s obverse side features an official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II to confirm it as legal tender of the Cook Islands. The effigy is surrounded and framed by geometric designs with Greek pillars below, and is accompanied by the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “Cook Islands,” and “20 Dollars.”
The reverse side is a beautifully gilded, exquisitely detailed sculpture of Zeus seated on a throne, wearing a naturalistically draped and folded robe and bearing a scepter. He holds a set of thunderbolts in his right hand and wears the stern expression of a ruler.
