In 2022, the Queen passed away ending her 70-year reign. Thus, her son, Charles III ascended to the throne after being the longest-serving heir-apparent in British history. As such, King Charles III now appears on bullion coinage from the Royal Mint. At JM Bullion, you can own one of the first 500 2022 British Gold Memorial Sovereigns struck to feature the King. The British Sovereign dates back to 1817 and originates from the Great Recoinage of 1816. Originally a circulation coin, these coins are now on the bullion market, with proof strikes also being made available. Similar to the American Gold Eagle, these coins are made with 22-karat gold.
This 2022 British Gold Memorial Sovereign will arrive in a protective plastic slab from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. The NGC has graded each of these coins as Mint State 70, which indicates a perfect specimen. These coins will display their full, original mint luster with no detractions of any kind. Furthermore, these are delegated as DPL (Deep Proof-Like) strikes. This means that these coins have hints of frosted elements and mirrored backgrounds.
King Charles III is on the obverse of the 2022 British Memorial Sovereign. The King is seen in left-profile relief, with no crown, as designed by Martin Jennings. This marks the first time ever that someone other than Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on a bullion version of the British Gold Sovereign.
The Royal Arms of England is on the reverse of the 2022 Gold Memorial Sovereign. In this Jody Clark design, the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland are propping up a shield, topped by a crown. The shield displays the coats of arms for England, Ireland, and Scotland.
