After years of speculation, Congress authorized the introduction of the nation’s first-ever palladium coin in 2010. In 2022, the US Mint repeats one of the most popular finishes to date in the American Palladium Eagle Series. In 2019, the United States Mint offered the Palladium Eagle for the first time as a reverse-proof specimen. This coin still holds the highest mintage record in this short series, as of 2022, at 30,000 coins in total. The reverse proof offers mirrored design elements over frosted background fields.
Winged Liberty by Adolph A. Weinman features on the obverse side of 2022-W Reverse Proof Palladium Eagle Coins. Designed in 1916 and originally used on the US dime, this design became known as the Mercury Dime because Liberty’s winged Phyrgian cap reminded the American public of literary depictions of the Roman messenger god, Mercury.
An American bald eagle is featured in the reverse design of 2022-W 1 oz Reverse Proof Palladium Eagles. This image was also created by Weinman, but was developed a decade earlier than the obverse. Weinman created this image of a bald eagle perched on a rock clutching a sapling for the 1907 American Institute of Architects gold medal.
