On the obverse of 2023 New Zealand Silver Kiwi Coins you will see a portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In this 1998 design, we see the Queen facing right with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara resting atop her head. The portrait was originally released by the Royal Mint and is credited to British artist Ian Rank-Broadley. The obverse also includes hallmark details across the border.
The reverse of 2023 1 oz New Zealand Silver Kiwi Coins features a Southern Brown Kiwi. Designed by Stephen Fuller, this image captures the flightless bird facing right as it searches for food on the beach. Various rocks are scattered across the sand, while in the background there is a larger rock structure. Inscriptions on the reverse read Tokoeka, Southern Brown Kiwi, Apteryx australis, and One Dollar.
A member of the group of flightless birds known as ratites, the Southern Brown Kiwi is one of five kiwi species native to New Zealand. The population for this species is estimated at 21,350 birds, which is split between the A. a. australis and A. a. lawryi subspecies. As for the total kiwi population, it is estimated to be about 68,000. Overall, this number is fairly low considering that the kiwis once exceeded 12 million before the arrival of humans in New Zealand.
