2 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins

The Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the most popular coins from the Perth Mint. Introduced in 1986 as the Gold Nugget, the series has been known as the Gold Kangaroo since 1990 and has offered several iterations of the coin in the decades since. Proof Gold Kangaroos are some of the most popular with collectors.

    2 oz Gold Kangaroo

The 2 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo is predominantly issued by Perth Mint as a proof coin. These high-relief proofs have frosted designs with mirrored fields and boast both greater visual depth to the field with improved 3D relief on the design elements. The coins have 2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold and bear a face value of $200 (AUD).

    Behind the Designs

The Western grey kangaroo is one of four subspecies of kangaroo alive today and is the most frequently featured on the reverse of the Australian Gold Kangaroo coins. Like all marsupials, Western Grey Kangaroos give birth to relatively undeveloped young, which then continue to develop and nurse in their mother’s pouch. The gestation period is around 30 to 31 days, after which the tiny, underdeveloped joey is born. The joey crawls into the mother’s pouch to continue its growth, feeding on milk produced by the mother. Around 9 to 10 months of age, the joey starts spending more time outside the pouch and eventually leaves the pouch altogether, though it continues to nurse for several more months.
