1/10 oz Gold Philharmonics at JM Bullion

The Austrian Gold Philharmonic was first introduced in 1989 with two weights available in the series. The Gold Philharmonic was Austria’s answer to the popular gold bullion coin market, dominated by coins like the South African Krugerrand, the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the American Gold Eagle. In 1991, the Austrian Mint introduced the 1/10 oz Gold Philharmonic.

Debut of 1/10 oz Gold Philharmonics

The Austrian Mint pursued a unique release schedule for the debut of its various denominations in the Gold Philharmonic Series. The collection started, like all major collections, with a 1 oz gold coin in 1989. This was paired the same year with a 1/4 oz gold coin. In 1991, the Austrian Mint introduced the 1/10 oz Gold Philharmonic, and later introduced a 1/2 oz Gold Philharmonic in 1994. From 1991 to 2013, the 1/10 oz gold coin was the smallest Gold Philharmonic available. It was eventually surpassed in 2014 by the 1/25 oz gold coin.

    Design

The Gold Philharmonic coins feature a design that pays homage to Austria’s rich musical heritage. The obverse of the coin depicts the Great Organ of the Golden Hall in Vienna’s Musikverein, along with the words “Republik Österreich” (Republic of Austria). The reverse side features an array of orchestral instruments, including the cello, violins, harp, flute, and French horn, symbolizing the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The inscriptions include the weight, fineness, and denomination of the coin.

    Legal Tender

Despite being primarily bullion coins, the Austrian Gold Philharmonics carry legal tender status in Austria. The face value of the 1/10 oz coin is 10 euros, although its actual market value is significantly higher due to the gold content. Historically, the 1/10 oz Gold Philharmonic had a face value in Austrian Schillings. Prior to the adoption of the Euro in 2002, the coins featured a 200 Schillings value from 1991 to 2001.
