The modern Gold Sovereign coin was introduced in 1817 late in the reign of King George III. In 1820, the first-ever Gold Double Sovereign was struck but not introduced into circulation. In 1887, during the reign of Queen Victoria, the Double Sovereign re-emerged and was released into circulation by the Royal Mint. Today, a Double Sovereign is produced each year alongside the long-running Gold Sovereign.
On the obverse side of Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign Coins, you will find one of many different designs of the reigning British monarch. Each coin will feature the monarch whose reign matches the date mark on the coin. The most common designs you are likely to find are those of Queen Victoria, whose reign is the second-longest in British history behind only her great-great-granddaughter, the current Queen of England, Elizabeth II. To date, five different effigies of Queen Elizabeth II have featured on the Gold Double Sovereign.
The reverse face of most Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign Coins includes the image of St. George on horseback and he charges and slays the dragon with his spear. This design was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci and featured on the Gold Sovereign from 1817 to 1825 and again from 1871 to the present.
