The $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin is one of the most popular pieces of gold for sale from previous American circulation collections. The Gold Double Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint starting in 1849, with the first coins a small proof set and regular circulation pieces introduced a year later in 1850. Unlike other denominations from the US Eagle Series, the Double Eagle only went through two designs in its history. The first of those was known as the Liberty Coronet. Now, Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion.

    Coin Highlights:

    • Coins arrive inside of individual protective flips!
    • Dated pre-1900 only in this listing!
    • Available in About Uncirculated or better condition!
    • Contains .9675 Troy oz of actual gold content.
    • Issued a face value of $20 (USD) by the United States.
    • Lady Liberty is visible on the obverse.
    • Heraldic eagle design on the reverse.

Congress established the denominations of the US Eagle gold series in the 1790s with the very first release of American coinage from the United States Mint. The term Eagle was used in association with the $10 denomination. Later introductions of a Half Eagle and a Quarter Eagle resulted in $5 and $2.50 gold coins as well, respectively.

In 1849, Congress passed another coinage act that authorized the production of a Double Eagle, or $20 coin, and a new gold dollar. The design used for 57 years on the Double Eagle was based on Christian Gobrechts Liberty Head design from the other denominations. It was modified for the Double Eagle by James B. Longacre who was then serving as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

Lady Liberty is visible on the obverse design of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins. Her effigy is shown in left-profile relief with a coronet crown in her hair. Libertys figure features hair that is pulled back in a bun with a few strands left to curl down the side of her head and neck. This face of the coin includes a date mark and 13 stars around the portrait of Liberty. Please note that dates on the coins available in this listing range from only 1850 to 1899.

A version of the heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles. This design was also created by Longacre and is considered a twist on the Great Seal of the United States. The front-facing bald eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons, while rays of sunshine span the gap above its head from wingtip to wingtip. Coins dated 1850 to 1865 have only a circular ring of 13 stars over the head of the eagle. Coins dated 1866 to 1899 have a modified cluster of 13 stars with an inscription of the national motto within.

These Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are About Uncirculated or better. This indicates a coin with extremely light or even trace signs of wear and tear present, with the wear and tear only visible on the highest reliefs of the strike. Each coin listed here predates 1900. Should you purchase multiples, please note we cannot guarantee any individual date mark. All coins are chosen at random after your payment has been processed and availability at that point in time will determine the specific coins you receive.
