Royal Canadian Mint Certified Silver Coins

With millions of silver bullion coins produced on an annual basis, it is no surprise that the Royal Canadian Mint’s collections often end up being certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and Professional Coin Grading Service. It is common to find RCM specimens that have been graded by one grading house or the other. Read on to learn a little bit more about available Certified Canadian Silver Coins and what those certifications mean.

    Common Canadian Silver Coins

The most common Canadian silver coins to earn certifications from the NGC or PCGS are the products from the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Series. This includes the traditional Brilliant Uncirculated coins with the right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse of the coins and the sugar maple leaf found on the reverse field of the coins. Additional Canadian Silver Maple Leafs you could find with certifications include those with privy marks, as well as other coins like the Canadian Silver Bison and the coins from the Birds of Prey Series.

    Common Bullion Certifications

When it comes to grading coins like the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, the most common certifications are Mint State designations with labels identifying the timing of arrival for certification with either the NGC or PCGS. These designations include:

    • Mint State 70: A coin with an MS70 certification is considered a perfect specimen with full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind present on the design elements.
    • Mint State 69: Known as a near-perfect coin, MS69 specimens have full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and limited in scope to the areas outside of the primary focal points of the coin.
    • Early Release/First Strike: This designation identifies silver bullion coins that were received by the NGC or PCGS within the first 30 days for certification.
    • First Day of Issue: These coins are received by the NGC or PCGS within 24 hours of the release date from the Royal Canadian Mint.

    Common Proof Certifications

When the NGC or PCGS certify proof coins, grading professionals look for the same qualities and visual appeal that apply to bullion coins. However, there are some designations that are unique to proof coins. Examples of possible certifications for proof Canadian silver coins include:

    • PF/PR70: Similar to the MS70 designation, this grade identifies a proof coin that is in perfect condition with no flaws of any kind.
    • PF/PR69: Again, similar to the MS69 designation, this grade reflects a near-perfect proof specimen that has its original luster with no more than two detracting flaws present in specific fields of the coin.
    • DCAM/UCAM: This designation identifies proof coins with distinctive visual appeal. This label stands for Deep-Cameo or Ultra-Cameo and refers to the presence of strong, frosted design elements overlaying deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
