Silver Bullion and Collectible Coins from Fiji at JM Bullion

Fiji is perhaps best-known among numismatists as the original nation of issue for the Silver Taku coin from the New Zealand Mint. However, Fiji’s contribution to silver coinage extends beyond this one coin program and includes a variety of low-mintage collectible coins issued in recent years as part of the groundswell of comic-themed coinage. You can explore all of the Fiji silver bullion coins and collectible issues in depth below.

    The Fiji Taku

The Fiji Silver Taku coin debuted from the New Zealand Mint in 2010 as an annual-issue silver bullion coin. The reverse side of the coins featured the same design in each year, while the obverse side had an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II between 2010 and 2012 with a new design of the Fiji coat of arms in 2013.

On the obverse side of 2010-2012 Silver Taku coins, the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II features in the fourth-generation design Ian Rank-Broadley created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998. This design was used for the first two years, but following a political conflict between England and its former colony in Fiji (as well as a military coup in Fiji), the Queen’s effigy was removed in 2013 in favor of the coat of arms for Fiji. This design includes a crest with symbols of the seafaring history of the island nation and is flanked by two Fijian figures.

The reverse face of all Fiji Silver Taku coins includes an image of the hawksbill turtle swimming through the waters of the South Pacific. The hawksbill is found anywhere from the northern tip of New Zealand’s north island to the waters off of Fiji and nearby Niue. The hawksbill turtle design has remained the same since 2010. While the coins were issued for Fiji (2010-2013), the design on the reverse included a sliver of mirrored finish that included the word “Fiji Taku,” which is the name for the hawksbill turtle in the local dialect. Each issue of the Fiji Silver Taku included:

    • Coins ship in protective packaging.
    • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
    • Issued a face value of Two Dollars authorized by Fiji.

In 2014, the coin series was reissued for the nation of Niue as the Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins. The design on the obverse reverted to the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, while the only change on the reverse is the use of “Turtle” in place of the previous “Fiji Taku” engraving.

    Global Edition Coca-Cola Coins

Among the more unique silver collections available right now is the Global Edition Coca-Cola Series issued on behalf of Fiji. The collection features colorized, Coke-cap-shaped coins that have different inscriptions on the reverse of each release. The series is inspired by the popularity of a 2018 Coca-Cola Bottle Cap release that featured a shaped silver coin with the exact appearance of a cap from a glass bottle of Coke. Those original issues in 2018 had the famous white-script text of “Coca-Cola” on the top of the cap, with the coat of arms of Fiji on the obverse side underneath. The 2020 Global Edition borrowed from this concept and put a unique twist on the collection.

2020 Global Edition Coca-Cola Bottle Cap Coins are the same shape with the same red colorization, but the white script is different on each one. With nine designs in total, each release has “Coca-Cola” script in both English and the native language from a different nation around the world in which you will find bottles of Coke for sale. The nations represented in this series include:

    • China
    • Israel
    • Korea
    • Russia
    • Japan
    • Egypt
    • Taiwan
    • Thailand
    • Sri Lanka

Each coin is individually packaged inside of a commemorative Coca-Cola-themed red tin with a soft liner inside to house and protect the coin. Further, each one comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a limited mintage of just 1,000 silver coins in total. The coins are 6 Gram specimens with .1929 Troy oz of .999 pure silver content and a 1 Fijian Dollar (FJD) face value. The coins also have proof visuals, creating frosted designs over mirrored fields.

5 oz Terracotta Army Silver Coins

The Terracotta Army is one of the great manmade wonders of the world. Built in the 3rd century BCE to accompany the Emperor Qin Shi Huang of China into the afterlife, the soldiers, horses, and chariots of the Terracotta Army remained undisturbed beneath the soil in China until 1974 when it was discovered by farmers. The famed figures of the Terracotta Army are the focus of a beautiful, antique silver coin series from the Scottsdale Mint that is issued on behalf of Fiji.

Terracotta Army 5 oz Silver Coins were issued in 2018 by the mint and feature a number of distinctive visuals. First and foremost, you will notice that the blank itself appears as though it has been chisled out of stone with its thick, roughly-hewn edges. The surfaces of both sides have an antique polish that lends a sense of age to the piece. On the obverse of all pieces, you will find the coat of arms for the nation of Fiji. The reverse of the coins offers new designs, to date, for the 2019 and 2020 releases. Those designs include:

    • 2018: a single Terracotta warrior is captured in the foreground, with his comrades flanking him in the background.
    • 2019: a stoic warrior stands next to his horse.
    • 2020: dozens of Terracotta warriors are featured standing in formation ready to accompany their emperor to the afterlife.

The coins are individually packaged by the Scottsdale Mint inside of drawstring pouches that have a stamped emblem on the front of the pouch. A Certificate of Authenticity booklet comes with each coin. The coins have 5 Troy oz of .999 pure silver content and a value of 2 Fijian Dollars. The debut release in 2018 had a mintage of 10,000 coins, but the subsequent releases have been capped at 1,500 each.

    Harry Potter Character Silver Coins

Throughout 2020, a number of Harry Potter-themed silver collections were released for nations around the world. Fiji was one of the leaders in this field with an eight-coin character series of Harry Potter coins. Each coin arrives inside of a protective display box with a presentation case and a Certificate of Authenticity. The coins contain 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and beautiful 2 Gram, .999 pure silver Certificates of Authenticity. The coins are proof specimens and have colorized reverse design elements.

On the obverse of the coins in the Harry Potter Series, you will find the Fijian coat of arms. This design depicts the quartered shield of the Fijian national seal. Supported by Fijian figures, the shield includes St. Andrew’s cross, a rampant lion, and is topped by an outrigger canoe. The reverse field of each coin has a different, colorized image of a character from the Harry Potter feature film franchise. Those represented in the release include:

    • Harry Potter
    • Hermoine Granger
    • Ron Weasley
    • Dumbledore
    • Severus Snape
    • Draco Malfoy
    • Bellatrix LeStrange
    • Voldemort

    Fiji Marvel Icons Series

In 2019, a truly distinctive series of 2 oz silver coins were issued for the island nation of Fiji. Known as the Fiji Marvel Icons Series, these 2 oz silver bullion coins have antique polish applied and depict the masks of various Marvel Comic superheroes with 3D coin designs. Each coin contains 2 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and bears a face value of $5 (Fijian dollars) backed by the Reserve Bank of Fiji. Although the coin designs themselves are impressive, that is hardly the only unique selling point for these coins.

The packaging of the individual Fiji Marvel Icons Series coins is one-of-a-kind. Each individual coin is housed inside of a protective black box with the domed side of the coin bearing the mask design facing upward. Inside each coin is a silver foil Certificate of Authenticity. The COA itself includes an additional 2 Grams of pure silver content and features colorized artwork depicting the specific superhero featured in that release. Available designs in this series to date include:

    • 2019 Iron Man – Arguably one of the most recognizable figures, Iron Man has appeared in 10 different Marvel Cinematic Universe films since 2008 and was portrayed by actor Robert Downey Jr. in all 10 instances.
    • 2019 Spiderman – The superhero that kicked off the Marvel Cinematic craze in the 21st century received his own reboot of sorts with Spider-Man: Homecoming’s release in 2017.

On the reverse side of each domed Fiji Marvel Icons Series coin is a flat surface with the image of the Fijian coat of arms. This seal includes the quartered shield of Fiji topped by a Polynesian sailing vessel. It is supported on either side by native Fijian figures and inscriptions on this face of the coins include “Fiji 2019,” “2 oz,” “.999 Fine Silver,” and “5 Dollars.”

    Fiji Silver Dog

Among the new annual options for Fiji, as of 2020, is the Fiji Silver Dog. This collection features various weights and finishes that depict a new dog species on the reverse of the coins each year. As is the case with most Fiji silver collections, the national coat of arms is found on the obverse.

    Other Fiji Silver

Increasingly, silver coins for sale on behalf of Fiji are issued in limited-run series with a singular design or several different designs in a limited collection. Examples includes the Street Fighter shaped character coins and the Street Fighter II colorized silver coins.
