The Hindu festival of Diwali is a festival of light. Though it is most closely associated with Hinduism, it is also a major festival for Jains, Sikhs, and some sects of Buddhists. The festival spans five days and is celebrated during Kartika, the Hindu lunisolar month that aligns with mid-October to mid-November on the Western calendar.
Obverse design elements on the Diwali Silver Medallion include a piece of artwork inspired by Indian culture, in particular, rangoli. The intricate design somewhat resembles a multi-pointed star and comes with the image of an oil lamp at the center of the design field.
Reverse visuals on the 1 oz Diwali Silver Medallion include a seated portrait of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Her figure is shown in a seated position just above a lotus flower. While two of her hands hold up flowers, another bursts forth with coins that fall from the palm of a third hand. The images of Lakshmi and the coins on this field have been finished with a gilded layer, a thin application of 24-karat gold to the design element.
