Throughout the history of the Morgan Silver Dollar, the New Orleans Mint was one of the leading producers of the coins. Morgan Dollars were struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The New Orleans Mint struck the coins from 1879 to 1904, meaning it missed only the very first and very last issues of Morgans. Now, 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollars are available to you for purchase online in certified condition from JM Bullion.

The New Orleans Mint was opened in 1838 amidst a wave of expansion for the United States Mint. To that point in history, the Philadelphia Mint was all that existed to make up the US Mint. In addition to the opening of the New Orleans Mint, the US also opened branch mints at Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dahlonega, Georgia.
While the latter two mints were opened to leverage local gold sources and exclusively minted gold coins for the US Mint, the New Orleans Mint opened to provide expanded coining capacity for the American South. New Orleans would issue both gold and silver coins for the US Mint until the outbreak of the Civil War. It was closed from 1861 until the end of the Reconstruction Era in 1878. After reopening in 1879, it would remain active until 1909.
Obverse design elements on these 1885-O Morgan Dollars include a left-profile bust of Liberty. She is shown here with a Phrygian cap on her head while the coronet crown and laurel wreath rest in her hair.
Reverse visuals on the 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar feature the heraldic eagle. This side, as well as the obverse, was designed by George T. Morgan and shows the heraldic eagle without a US national shield. It does, however, maintain the forward-facing eagle with spread wings, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace.
These 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins come in Mint State 64 condition. Coins with this grade showcase average mint luster, small contact marks in groups, one or two moderate marks, and one or two small patches of hairlines.
