In 1908, Bela Lyon Pratt redesigned the $5 Gold Half Eagle for the United States Mint. This design would go on to become one of the most distinctive in American history. First and foremost, it marked the first incuse strike in American history. It was also, notably, one of the first forms of American currency with an indigenous figure.
With an incuse strike, the design elements are sunk into the surface of the coin, leaving a flat surface with relief created within the field of the coin. Conversely, a traditional strike engraves the imagery in 3D relief on the surface of the coin.
An indigenous figure is featured in the obverse design of 1909-D Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins. This design shows a stoic indigenous figure in left-profile relief with a full, feathered headdress. Within the design field, you will also find the date mark of the coin and 13 stars.
For the reverse design field of 1909 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins, you will find a depiction of the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is at rest with its wings at its side in left-profile relief. The eagle is perched on a sheaf of arrows.
These 1909-D $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade showcase an attractive, high-quality luster with a few scattered, small contact marks, one or two small patches of hairlines, and light scuff marks.
