In 1909, the United States Mint issued its new Indian Gold Eagle design from 1908 at four different branch mints, making 1909 the only year in which four mints issued the coins. The San Francisco Mint issued one of the lowest totals this year at just under 300,000 coins. Surviving specimens as part of the Fairmont Collection are popular numismatic pieces. Right now, certified 1909-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available to purchase from JM Bullion.

Each 1909-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin offered here comes in Mint State 62 condition. Coins with this grade showcase impaired or dull mint luster, in general, with clusters of small contact marks, a few large marks or nicks, and noticeable hairlines. These particular 1909-S Indian Half Eagles are a special coin to behold.
The number of surviving 1909-S Indian Half Eagles is low, with each of these specimens boasting sharply struck designs on both sides with a deep, honey-gold color. The luster remains strong for the grade with a soft, frosted finish.
For the obverse design of the 1909 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin, the US Mint features Bela Lyon Pratt’s left-profile bust of an indigenous figure. This figure is shown with a feathered headdress and is struck incuse on the field of the coin, a facet it shares with the incuse strike of the eagle on the reverse.
In the reverse field of 1909-S $5 Gold Half Eagles, the American bald eagle is captured in left-profile relief. The eagle is shown with its wings resting at its side as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch around the sheaf.
