Throughout the history of the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin, there was one constant: the Philadelphia Mint. In total, the United States Mint issued the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle 24 times in a 27-year period from 1907 to 1933. Despite a relatively limited mintage timeframe, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle has gone down as America’s most popular coin design. When the United States Mint introduced the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in 1907, the Philadelphia Mint was one of the first branches to issue the coins. Over the course of 27 years of issue from 1907 to 1933, there were only two dates that did not feature a Philadelphia Mint: 1916 and 1930.
Coincidently, it was the San Francisco Mint that replaced the Philadelphia Mint in each of those years as the only one to strike the coins. The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was variably produced by the Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco, and Denver Mints. In addition to striking the coins 22 of the 24 years, Philadelphia was also the only mint to issue the coins in several years: 1907, 1912, 1913, 1921, 1928, 1929, 1932, and 1933.
Obverse design elements on these 1928 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles include the powerful image of Lady Liberty. This front-facing relief depicts Liberty walking toward the viewer with rays of sunshine and a ring of stars behind her figure.
Reverse visuals on the 1928 Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle include the American bald eagle. This design was also created by Saint-Gaudens and shows the bald eagle gliding through the sky as it passes over the rising sun on the horizon.
These 1928 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to you for purchase in Mint State 64 condition. Coins in this condition showcase average mint luster, several small contact marks in groups, one or two moderate marks, and one or two small patches of hairlines.
