Introduced in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget, the coin series now known as the Australian Gold Kangaroo was originally offered for four years as a collection with a different image of historic gold nuggets found in Australia on each denomination in the series. The 1990 change to the Australian Kangaroo brought with it a shared design on all denominations, but new images of the kangaroo with each date mark.

From the outset in 1990, the Australian Gold Kangaroo featured the same four weights originally available in the Gold Nugget Series. Among these, the 1/10 oz Gold Kangaroo was, and still is, the smallest coin regularly offered throughout the history of the series. The 1/10 oz Gold Kangaroo features .9999 pure gold content and boasts a face value of $15 (AUD).

Design Inspiration

The native kangaroo species is the inspiration for the annual designs on the reverse of all Gold Kangaroos. The same image appears on each denomination, with a new design chosen each year by Perth Mint. The Western grey kangaroo is one of four subspecies of the marsupial and is the most common to appear in this series. The Western Grey Kangaroo is a medium-sized kangaroo species known for its distinctive grey-brown fur. It has a robust build, with males being larger than females. Adult males typically stand about 4.6 to 5.6 feet tall and can weigh between 110 to 145 pounds. Females are generally smaller, with an average height of around 3.6 to 4.6 feet and weighing between 50 to 90 pounds.
