In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint expanded its existing Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series to feature fractional-ounce gold coins. From 1979 to 1981, only 1 oz gold was available to buyers. While the Gold Maple Leaf Series expanded over time to include common fractional-ounce gold coins, but the Royal Canadian Mint took a different approach to rolling out its fractional-ounce Gold Maple Leafs.

Debut of the 1/2 oz Gold Maple

The Royal Canadian Mint introduced its first fractional-ounce gold bullion coins in November 1982. However, the first two weights introduced did not include the 1/2 oz gold coin. The 1982 expansion of the series included only 1/4 oz gold and 1/10 oz gold, with the 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf not introduced until 1986.

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is predominantly issued as a BU specimen for investors. The 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf is available individually in plastic flips or in sealed plastic sheets of 10 coins.
